Phuket

Phuket, is Thailand largest Island and connected to the mainland by bridge. Situated on the west coast of Thailand, Phuket is known as the Pearl of the Andaman Sea. Phuket is well known for its tourism industry, in times past Phuket was once known for its tin mining and rubber plantations, some examples of which you can still see in Phuket today.

The island is approx 49 km in length and 21 km wide of which over 71% is covered with mountains. The island doesn’t have big lakes and rivers, the deep wells left over from the tin mining provide the main water sources.

The west coast has sandy beaches while the east coast is more muddy. The northern part of the island still has protected rain forests which are part of the national parks on the island (Khao Prathiu, Khao Bang Pae and Khao Phara). The Sirinat National Park on the northwestern coast was established in 1981 and protects the Nai Yang beach where sea turtles lay their eggs.

Tourism is most dense at Patong beach on the central west coast of the island. Patong provides exciting night life, a shopping area, bars and many restaurants. Other points of interest on the west coast are Karon Beach, Kata Beach and on the southern tip of the island Naiharn and Rawai. Areas less developed then Patong on the north are Kamala, Surin and Bang Tao.

Phuket is surrounded by many islands providing incredible diving and snorkeling spots. Phuket is also the western landmass that protects Phang Nga and Koh Yao Noi, Thailand from the Andaman sea.

There are 4 core islands in the Phuket region. Most famous are the Phi Phi and Similan Islands for their crystal blue water and the variety of marine life. Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai in Phang Nga are growing in popularity for their easy to the amazing islands and limestone karsts that are a short boat trip from the hotels and resorts available on Koh Yao Noi island.
