Islands / Beaches
Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai are not the only picturesque islands in the area providing relaxation, exploration and sheer enjoyment. The enchanting district of Koh Yao encompasses some 44 small islands, including the four limestone islands of Mu Ko Hong (Ko Lao or Ko Sa Ka, Ko Lao Riam, Ko Pakka, Ko Lao La Ding and Ko Hong). To name just a few!
Koh Hong – West of Koh Yao Noi
Be surrounded by nature at Koh Hong, the biggest island opposite our resort. Also known as Room Island, Koh Hong received its name thanks to a remarkable group of caves that sit in the middle of the island. The caves are created by both the erosion of the limestone and the tides and currents of the sea. Amongst the caves is a large lake that joins the sea via a small inlet. It’s a great place to swim, with great visibility. The only beach on the island, Pelay Beach, is world renowned for its beauty, featuring pristine white sands and an enclave of limestone casts. Hong Island is also home to the nests that make ‘bird’s nest soup’. As it is a valuable commodity, it is possible to see locals climbing long bamboo poles and risking their lives to collect the nests. This island is perfect for a day trip.
Koh Phag Bia – East of Koh Yao Noi
Koh Phag Bia is a small island on the west coast of Koh Nok, there is a small beach covering about 150 meters where fringing reefs are located. There is a small “Mushroom Shaped” island in the bay which is fun to swim around.
Koh La Ding
Koh La Ding is a small island in the shape of a U. It has a white, sandy beach located amongst beautiful limestone casts and is perfect for swimming, snorkelling and relaxing. It is also possible to view locals collecting the nests for ‘bird’s nest soup’ here. Again, this island is great to visit as part of a day trip.
Koh Yong
Koh Yong is one of the best places in the area to collect Hoi Pong, a shell that constitutes one of the main food sources for the people of Koh Yao Noi. The island is only small and lies to the west of Koh Yao Noi.
Koh Plong – West of Koh Yao Noi
Another island abundant with shells is Koh Plong. It lies to the west of Koh Yao Yai. The best time to visit this beach is around low tide, where depending on the season, shells stretch across the beach for some two kilometres.
Egg Island (Ko Khai)
Crystal clear blue waters make this one of the most spectacular snorkeling spots of this region. Observing the abundant marine life around Egg Island is truly a magical experience and even rare animals such as dolphins can occasionally be spotted here.
BEACHES
The pristine beaches in the Koh Yao Noi area are some of the most picturesque in the world. You will be spoilt for choice. Here you can, not only relax, but also explore the local flora and fauna as well as partake in many activities including kayaking, snorkelling, diving and more.
Some of the beaches in Koh Yao include:
Tah Kao
Tah Kao is a beach covered in small, coloured pebbles. This colourful beach is located near the government office of Koh Yao Village and close to the small island of Koh Nok which is covered with beautiful forest. In low tide it is possible to walk to Koh Nok. At other times it is a short distance to canoe. This is an OK swimming beach.
Pa Sai
Pa Sai Beach is a pristine, long beach with clean white sand. There are plenty of shady trees to relax under and stunning views of neighbouring islands – including Krabi – to enjoy. Pa Sai Beach is located seven kilometres from the Koh Yao Noi town hall and has shops in the area. This is an ideal swimming beach.
Klong Jak Beach
Klong Jak Beach is a private beach with access via a dirt road. The views are truly mesmerising and it is possible to see much of Koh Yao’s scenery from this point. The beach is also known as Waterfall Beach thanks to its close proximity to the waterfall of the national park where there is an abundance of wildlife including monkeys. Salt and fresh water swimming is possible here.
Koh Nok
There is a small beach located on the north-west side Koh Nok, east of Koh Yao Noi. The beach at Koh Nok is surrounded by several small bays that are a joy to explore. The beach on Koh Nok is so private it makes a perfect place to take your loved one for a romantic sunset walk. Most hotels and resorts can organise a BBQ and transfers. A good swimming beach.
Kien Bay
Kien Bay features a beach of squeaky clean white sand, crystal clear waters and a forest background. Located on the north of Koh Yao Noi, it is part of Phang Nga Bay National Park. This is a popular beach, with perfect swimming and snorkelling conditions. Restaurants are located nearby.
Koh Boey Yai
Located on the north-east of Koh Yai Noi, Koh Boey Yai is part of Phang Nga National Park. A small island, Koh Boey Yai is full of native flora and fauna, most notably some 4000 rai of mangrove forest located on the west of the island. The beaches of Koh Boey Yai are not suitable for swimming as there are often rotten shells covering the sand. The island is surrounded by beautiful fringing reefs.
Koh Koo Doo Ya
There are many small beaches on Koh Koo Doo Yai, located north of Koh Yao Noi. The island, with its beautiful limestone hills, is the perfect place to relax or explore. Activities include snorkelling, swimming and kayaking. If you’re lucky, you might enjoy one of the small beaches – partly enclosed by the hills – all to yourself.
